How to Decorate a Dorm Room
Enhance Available Space
When it comes to decorating a dormitory room, there are several environments you want to create: one conducive to academic study, comfortable for sleep purposes, attractive and inviting to the eye, with space and readily available seating for unexpected visitors.
A clutter-free desk top with space-savers and organizers is a must. Pencil and pen holders, file folders, paper trays, and a raised platform for computer monitor or laptop are basic space savers.
Add a small shelf to the back of the desk or on the wall next to it at arm's length to keep stapler, stamps, paper, paperclips, correction tape, floppy disks, etc. handy, and free up desk space. A small combination white board/cork board on the wall by the desk is great for posting class schedules, messages, important dates, notes, things to remember, etc.
Instead of a regular lamp, get a small gooseneck lamp that allows you to direct light where it is needed most. A paper holder made for a computer monitor conveniently displays research papers and notes at eye level while typing. Even if there is no computer, attaching a paper holder with a retracting arm on the wall in front of the desk, or another suitable location, offers the same type convenience while writing.
Soft sheets, warm bedding, and a comfortable pillow are worth their weight in gold after long days spent in classrooms, and evenings studying or de-stressing with friends. Linens with at least a 280-thread count are best; they are softer and last longer than those of less quality. Of course, nothing beats Egyptian cotton for slumber-filled softness, if funds allow.
Especially during colder winter months, linens made from flannel and jersey material are extra cozy. Select bedding that is warm, without being heavy and confining. A summer weight quilted coverlet over an electric cotton blanket provides ample warmth and coziness even on frigid nights.
The peaceful, soothing sounds made by moving, splashing water in a table top water fountain can help to block out unwanted background noise. The therapeutic sounds of the water are also conducive to peaceful slumber.
When it comes to decor attractive ways to save space and provide adequate seating, meet both objectives by the addition of bean bag chairs and inflatable furniture. Available in a variety of styles, colors, and fabrics, bean bag chairs are comfortable, easy to reposition, and are stackable. The college and University logo bean bag chairs are popular, and make great keepsakes!
Inflatable loveseats, chairs, ottomans, and accent pillows are lightweight, colorful, come in a variety of sizes and styles, and make trendy additions to any type decor. Increase available floor space when not in use by keeping them on the top of a bunk or regular type bed. Deflated, they are easy to store; inflated they can easily be carried from one dorm room to another.
